Thousands of people are set to benefit in a couple of months as the Free Schoolbooks Scheme has been extended for post-primary students starting the upcoming academic year - here’s everything you need to know

The Free Education Scheme will provide free schoolbooks to Junior Cycle post-primary students from the upcoming 2024/2025 academic year.

With Junior Cycle books costing around €300 on average, it is a handy boost in the midst of the ongoing cost of living crisis. What has changed in the Free Education Scheme? As of the upcoming school year, Junior Cycle students will now avail of free school books thanks to the scheme, which previously only applied to primary schools and special schools. More than 212,000 students enrolled in approximately 670 post-primary schools, will benefit from the new scheme.

Who is eligible for the scheme? The new Junior Cycle Schoolbooks Scheme, introduced for the 2024/25 school year, will remove the cost from families of funding schoolbooks, including eBooks, and core classroom resources for all Junior Cycle students in post-primary schools in the Free Education Scheme.Schools have the autonomy to implement the scheme within the scope of the guidance. Schools have been asked to communicate to parents/guardians how the scheme will be run in their school.

Funding under the Junior Cycle Schoolbooks Scheme does not extend to including the purchase of digital devices by schools. However, schools may use the funding for digital media support, which relates to teaching and learning within curricular requirements as outlined in the guidance. How to apply There is no need to apply, schools will communicate relevant information about the scheme and let parents and guardians know about any classroom resources that are not provided to students.
