Let It Be, Hey Jude and Can't Buy Me Love were among the Beatles classics Sir Paul played

Sir Paul McCartney treated thousands at Glastonbury and millions around the world to a near 40-song set list last night.

The stunning two-and-a-half hour show represented a complete overview of his 60-year plus musical career, ranging from a pre-Beatles song by The Quarrymen, right up to his newest material. And as well as beloved tracks by The Beatles and from Sir Paul's later group Wings, the set included some lesser-known tunes which were probably only familiar to McCartney aficionados.

The former Beatle became the festival's oldest solo headliner, a week after he celebrated his 80th birthday .Last night's electrifying show - a recording of which was also broadcast on BBC1 - included surprise appearances from Bruce Springsteen and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

To end the historic set he sang The Beatles' song The End to a cheering crowd with Springsteen and Grohl also returning to provide guitar solos.
