The Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) has delivered a massive €43.75m to the League of Ireland - here’s a detailed look at what it means.

Christmas has come early for Irish football - with the game here banking a massive chunk of the €173m announced on Monday in the Government’s Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund windfall.

And afterwards, Minister of State Byrne broke down what the investment would mean to the footballing community. Q: How big a dent will the €16.4m award to Sligo Rovers make to their Showgrounds project? A: Back in May 2021, when Sligo Rovers published their Masterplan detailing the redevelopment of the Showgrounds, as a stadium ‘surpassing all the requirements of a UEFA Category 3’ arena, the cost of the project was put at €17.3m.

“Dalymount was the FAI’s number one choice and Sligo was the FAI’s number two choice, so I am really glad to see that we were able to get those ones over the line. “As they get planning and as other matters become clear, that information can be presented to the Department and the scoring then changes. But essentially they are the next big FAI project on the list.”

“What I do want to say is that under this government, there has been more money for sport than ever before and that includes football as well.” “The priority is to agree the MOU with the FAI, make sure the FAI is funded… so we are working on that at the moment. Officials have been looking at the academy proposal. We want to do that.
