Mourners were told by her son Cllr Aengus O'Rourke that the former Fianna Fáil deputy leader was interested in politics right up until her death at the age of 87 last Thursday.
Former Fianna Fáil Minister Mary O’Rourke was the “ultimate public representative”, "fearless" and a “trailblazer”, her funeral was told on Monday.
Cllr O’Rourke said that Mrs O’Rourke was “fearless” and joked that “mum's frankness on occasion had me behind the couch with my fingers in my ears”. He joked that it felt like the family had a “loyalty card” for St Vincent’s Hospital and staff at her nursing home called her “Lazarus” as she “recovered so many times”.
The funeral heard how the Fianna Fáil flag was a reminder of how the Lenihan and O’Rourke families were “steeped in the history and tradition of Fianna Fáil”.
