Hundreds took to the streets of Derna to protest the government's failure to protect them from what has turned out to be Libya's worst natural disaster
The World Health Organization puts the number of those killed in the 120,000-strong city at 3,922, although with thousands still missing, it is feared the toll could be much higher. The city’s mayor estimates that more than 20,000 people were lost.
Two of his friends were at a residents’ meeting just a week before the floods, where concerns were raised over the safety of the dams above the city. One of them, Mustafa Al-Tarabulsi, died when floods tore through the city at 3am on 11 September, and the building where the meeting had been held was among hundreds destroyed.
“The collapse of the dam didn’t happen naturally. We want to find out who is responsible for the collapse of the dam. It had not been looked after, repaired or inspected for decades.”Hundreds of people took to the streets of Derna on Monday,to protect the city from the floods which have left thousands displaced.
