Wind Energy Ireland is backing up Fair Seas’ repeated calls to deliver the crucial and long promised legislation

A marine protection bill promised by the Irish government “before the summer recess” has not been delivered and environment groups are furious. The legislation, which aims to protect 30 per cent of Ireland’s seas, has been on the table since December 2022 and was due to be published before Easter.

WEI say the MPA Bill must be moved to the top of the political agenda before the General Election to ensure marine biodiversity is properly protected and inform planning decisions for offshore wind. Ireland has targets to develop 5,000 megawatts of offshore wind energy by the end of 2030 to provide clean, affordable energy. With that push comes decisions about where best to place those turbines with minimal disruption to marine life.

Ireland’s biggest special protection area for birds was announced at the same time, while May saw the government designate our first marine national park on the Greater Skellig Coast.
