GPA chief Tom Parsons warns of the diminishing support for amateur status in Gaelic games, citing a new report revealing substantial financial losses for inter-county players. Players generate €591 million annually but face average losses of €5,200 on salary and €3,500 on overtime, adding to the increasing costs of fuel and nutrition.
The GAA ’s amateur status is close to the brink, says GPA chief Tom Parsons, with players increasingly unhappy with their lot.
Parsons pointed out how the GPA hasn’t been in a position to increase its own student scholarship scheme since 2008, while the Government grants scheme is worth 24% less now per player than it was back then. The GPA is currently working out a new players’ charter with the GAA and will look to secure greater allowances for players on the back of this new report.
“If we ask that question in five years' time, and we get a mandate that 60-70% of players say ‘No, actually we want a professional ’, the GPA are bound by what the members want to do. He replied: “Well, then it's a completely different conversation. You're bringing that back to the GAA, you have unwilling participants in something that is generating this amount of economic activity. And it might start with, where does it start?
“You have a GAAGO platform, which is a subscription service. Sponsors are getting more creative in how they market sponsorship.” “I just think students, even at club level, that level of commitment, that level of stoicism isn't there.
