Ironic that row over misogyny erupted in the week Croke Park hosted largest women’s sporting event in GAA’s historySir, – In the very week that Croke Park hosted the largest women’s sporting event in its history, with 80,000 people filling the stadium to seeAfter four years leading a process initiated by the GAA, McAleese has called out a lack of leadership and a reluctance to have women involved in decision-making at the highest levels of Gaelic games.

The irony is stark. At a moment when women’s sport in Ireland has never been more visible or more celebrated, one of Ireland’s most respected women leaders has walked away from efforts to achieve equality within our national games, saying the commitment to integration has “evaporated”.

The Brexit lesson guiding Mark Carney’s response to Trump’s tariffsSir, – While I believe in equality of access to sport, we must be realistic in how we assess equality of inter-county funding in the GAA. The men’s game generates by far most of the GAA’s revenue.

People are not restricted from attending the women’s games, but the men’s game, by evidence of footfall at matches and television viewership, is considered a better product and therefore more people wish to see it. So why should the money it generates, by getting bums on seats, not go back in to the teams that create that high-end revenue? People don’t want to hear that side of the debate.

This is about economics and to dress it up as misogyny is misleading. You choose the product you want and you pay a premium for it, if you consider the quality is good enough. Sport is not equal because quality of product is not equal.
