Galway boss Pádraic Joyce gives his ideal date for All-Ireland finals

The All-Ireland hurling and football finals have been played in July since 2022.

While Joyce accepts that something had to give as club players were being marginalised too much and is broadly supportive of the split season, he feels that the season is too tightly packed for county players, particularly those who play with successful clubs.

He said: “The county player finishes with us in July, then they go straight into the club because obviously the county player is so important to the club. They might get a couple of weeks off there after the All-Ireland final, if they get that far, but then it's into the club and then it's back in with the county again to do their pre-season.

“Take Dylan McHugh, for example, he's involved with Corofin. This is the first year he's got a proper , we gave him six weeks off before Christmas just to try to get a break. Shane was the same in Dublin, didn't get a , then he's going from club into pre-season and they don't get a pre-season done and it comes against them as the season goes on.

“Like, this year it's probably the toughest Division One that's ever been out there. It's probably the eight best teams in the country are in Division One.
