Galway star Paul Conroy discusses the challenges and rewards of balancing a successful GAA career with family life and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Galway star Paul Conroy has admitted that balancing his Gaelic Athletic Association ( GAA ) schedule, work commitments, and family life can be challenging. However, the footballer of the year praised his wife Caroline and their families for their invaluable support in helping with their two-year-old son, Páidí. At 35, Paul is at the peak of his career and eagerly anticipates a successful 2025 both on and off the field. Paul shared, 'It can be tough, but I've a great support network around me.

I'm very lucky to have my wife Caroline and our families. If Páidí needs to be picked up from the babysitter, there is always someone around to do it. Without that help, things would be very difficult. He is two and a bit now, so he comes along to some of my games.' Paul works as a secondary school teacher at Claregalway College, training and fulfilling match commitments with Galway during the week, making his downtime with family away from GAA crucial. He explained, 'With Paidi, I spend a lot of time with him and my wife when I am not training. I go for walks, sea swimming, and the saunas. I do a small bit of traveling where we can. We are active people, and I wouldn't be one to stay in the house all day watching TV. We like to be on the go. I enjoy the simple things.'Paul enjoyed an incredible 2024, with no doubt he is only getting better with age. He stated, 'I look after myself and I look after my body. I feel good at training and I go out of my way to continuously make progress with my career whether it is with food and supplements or mindset. I want to be in the best position that I can to perform. If I wasn’t enjoying it I wouldn’t be doing it because it takes up so much of our lives. I am enjoying it at the moment and hopefully we can have a big year this year.' Paul isn't approaching 2025 differently from last year. But he wants to savor his playing time while he can. He remarked, 'I am trying to enjoy it, I know that sounds like a very simple thing. We have big games ahead, and I want to take it all in because I know it won’t last forever. I want to enjoy being around the other players. We had 15,000 people watching us at a league game in February in Castlebar, that is pretty cool. We are in a very privileged position.
