Galway Launches Road Safety Strategy with Lower Speed Limits and More Cameras
Road Safety, Speed Limits, Galway

A new road safety strategy for Galway aims to drastically reduce fatalities and injuries by 2030 through lower speed limits, increased camera enforcement, and targeted infrastructure improvements. The plan addresses the disproportionate risk faced by young drivers and the link between high-speed crashes and severe outcomes.

Strategy outlines strong evidence-based link between high speed limits and devastating road collisions. Representatives from Galway City and County Councils, the Road Safety Authority, and An Garda Síochána gathered at Áras an Chontae to launch the Galway City and County Road Safety Strategy 2026-2030.

The strategy, published on Tuesday, aims to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries by 15% by 2027 and 50% by 2030. Between 2021 and 2025, 51 people were killed on Galway roads, and 360 were seriously injured. Notably, people aged 16-25 accounted for over one-fifth of casualties. Liam Conneally, chief executive of Galway County Council, stated that five of the 128 road deaths in Ireland this year occurred in Galway.

The strategy highlights a clear correlation between high speed limits and severe accidents, as over half of the injured or killed individuals were involved in collisions on roads with speed limits of 80 km/h or higher. In contrast, low-speed roads (30 km/h or less) accounted for only 3% of casualties. Uinsinn Finn, a senior council director, announced an upcoming review to lower speed limits in urban town cores to 30 km/h.

Gardaí will also deploy more speed-detection cameras to enforce safer driving. Mayor Helen Ogbu emphasized the need for behavioral change among drivers, while Kevin Jennings from the Galway Cycling Campaign called for systematic improvements to road safety infrastructure
