Connacht champions get measure of redress for the All-Ireland final defeat by Armagh

A largely ineffectual first half, despite which they led at the break, gave way to some more energetic attacking play, which yielded the contest’s only three two-pointers, all swept over in as many minutes.
Armagh were disappointing after a bright start and could only muster four points in the second half, just one from play. Just before the end, they also lost Niall Grimley to a red card after he had thrown a dig at the impressively repurposed corner back Daniel O’Flaherty, whose lively forward movement had brought Galway’s first score of the night.
For a team whose lengthy but fruitless opening play in the All-Ireland final was one of the prime exhibits in favour of changing the game, Galway didn’t appear particularly inspired by the new age. With no shortage of possession, they appeared to be treating the 40-metre arc like an exclusion zone. Even the frequent incursions of goalkeeper Connor Gleeson, who has good kicking range, were more directed at prolonging endless passing bouts rather than attempting a two-point score.
By contrast, Armagh were sharp and fast, bouncing into counterattacking mode and simply looking for scores. Oisín Conaty was in productive form, kicking 0-3 from play – the third whipping over the bar with goal threatened. At the time it didn’t look significant. Matthew Tierney sent Blaine Hughes the wrong way and rolled the ball into the far corner before it was Armagh’s turn to breach the 3 v 3 and Ó Curraoin pointed the free for a two-point lead at the break, 1-4 to 0-5.
