Garcia: Minjarez targets Sakai over 2019 paid sick leave ruling

Nine days before San Antonio’s paid sick leave ordinance was to kick in, Sakai issued a temporary injunction blocking it from taking effect.“Peter Sakai betrayed working families,” the mailer declares. But the paid sick leave issue receded into our collective rear view a couple of years ago and hasn’t come up much in political debates since then.
The ordinance — requiring businesses to grant employees one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked — was passed under duress by council members who believed that it would never be implemented. He said his ruling was not a political statement, but an action based upon a strict reading of the law.
