Ireland's Garda Síochána (police force) is making a significant change to its uniform, replacing the iconic peaked hats with modern baseball caps.

Garda authorities have introduced a new baseball cap as the standard headwear for thousands of officers, effective this Friday. The new dark blue caps, featuring a prominent gold Garda crest, supersede the traditional peaked hats worn for decades. This change is part of a substantial, multi-million euro initiative to modernize the entire Garda uniform. In 2022, officers received new clothing as part of this program, and now they are receiving a new cap.

Additionally, officers are being equipped with a dark blue vest to be worn over their light blue Garda shirts. The Gardaí have clarified that the traditional peaked cap will remain in service for formal ceremonies and events. Officers will also continue to wear their official shirts and ties for these occasions. Furthermore, the Irish Mirror has learned that the Gardaí are currently testing new gear for motorcycle officers. This new gear, being evaluated in a roads policing unit, aims to provide the same level of protection as the current leather jackets while offering improved breathability. The trial aims to determine if this new gear can be adopted by all Garda motorcycle riders
