Irish police, known as Gardaí, are ditching their traditional peaked hats for baseball caps as part of a uniform modernization effort.

Irish police, known as Gardaí , are introducing a new look with the unveiling of baseball caps as the standard headwear for their uniform personnel. Starting this Friday, all Garda uniform officers will sport the dark blue caps, featuring a prominent gold Garda crest. This change marks a significant shift from the traditional peaked hats worn by the force for decades, and is part of a multi-million euro initiative to modernize the entire Garda uniform.

In 2022, Garda officers received new clothing as part of this upgrade program, and now the cap change completes another phase. Alongside the new caps, officers will also be issued dark blue gilets to wear over their light blue Garda shirts, providing an additional layer of functionality. Despite the introduction of the baseball caps, the traditional peaked hats will remain an integral part of the Garda uniform, reserved for official ceremonies and events. Officers will continue to wear their official shirts and ties for these formal occasions. Adding to the modernization efforts, Gardaí are currently testing new gear for their motorcyclists. The trial is taking place within a roads policing unit to assess the practicality and effectiveness of the new gear for all Garda bikers. Sources indicate that the new gear offers comparable protection to the existing biker leathers while boasting enhanced breathability
