The incident has caused outrage among environmentalists and animal lovers
Gardai and the National Parks and Wildlife Service are hunting a shooter who killed a rare white tailed eagle. The body of the two year old female was found near Cranberry Lake, south Roscommon, a few days ago.
The bird concerned had a tracking device and originally lived around Lough Derg before moving up to the Roscommon area a few months ago. She was shot between Monday, March 11 and Tuesday, March 12 last. “We deplore the deliberate killing of a rare and endangered species and take birds of prey protection extremely seriously.”
She said: “This is a devastating incident and very upsetting to everybody in the area who enjoyed seeing the eagle flying. Deliberately shooting a rare eagle is not the type of people we are. I would urge anybody who has information on this attack to contact the Gardai in Roscommon or the NPWS.”
