Two new Garda recruits, Manus Murphy and Fionnuala McCorry, shared their experiences and the realities of joining the force on RTE Radio 1. Murphy revealed his Valentine's Day connection, meeting his wife at Coppers nightclub, a popular spot for Garda and nurses. Both spoke about the dangers faced daily, with Murphy recounting his bravery during an armed robbery in his sixth week on the job. The interview promoted the Garda recruitment drive, highlighting the challenges and the rewards of serving the community.
Gardai promoting the force as a career have revealed the dangers of the job and how it's possible to marry a nurse after meeting in Coppers . Dublin nightclub Copper Face Jacks, which was launched by former garda Cathal Jackson in 1996, is famous as a meeting point for hero frontline services like gardai and nurses. Garda Manus Murphy, from Ballyfermot in Dublin, yesterday revealed just a few days before Valentine's Day his good fortune at meeting his wife on a night out.
He said: 'Funny story, the night I met my girlfriend, now wife, we were at a separate party and then we ended up back in Coppers. Maybe destiny put something in motion that night so that a few years later I had to become a guard.' He and colleague Garda Fionnuala McCorry were speaking on Wednesday to RTE Radio 1 presenter Oliver Callan as part of a new recruitment campaign by An Garda Siochana. Jiu Jitsu expert Garda Murphy revealed how he bravely - in only his sixth week on the job - responded to a 999 call about an armed robbery. The former retail worker, who is based at Store Street Garda Station in Dublin city centre, was told the thug had a knife. But it turned out to be a syringe, and the robber ran, so Garda Murphy gave chase, caught him, and court and jail followed. He said: 'Absolutely, there are dangers. I was in the right place to intercept an armed robbery. It wasn’t firearms. When the call came in, it came in as a knife, but it turned out to be a syringe attack. 'I was able to apprehend this person who held up an establishment, took all the money, put people in considerable fear, nearly put them in harm, and fled the scene. I chased him down, got him, had him in custody, objected to his bail, sent a file to the DPP, the evidence including CCTV, and it was dealt with in the Dublin Circuit Court, so he has gone to prison for a number of years. Job done. 'I’d been a guard for six weeks at the time. I’ve had colleagues catching a guy running down the street with a knife in their first week after becoming a guard. It can happen.’ Gardai Murphy and McCorry were sent to Dublin - two months before they graduated - to help to quell the violent riots of November 2023. Garda McCorry, from Belfast, is now based at Navan Garda Station in Meath and also spoke about dangerous moments on duty. Former schoolteacher Garda McCorry, 30, said: 'We do face dangers. We don’t know what we are going to when we go to a call.’ She added: 'I haven’t been to Coppers. I must be the only guard in the country who has never been to Coppers.’ The two graduated from Garda College in December 2023 and were yesterday speaking to promote a new recruitment campaign. Trainees are paid €354 a week for the 36 weeks of training, while food and accommodation is provided free while resident in the Garda College at Templemore, Co Tipperary. The starting salary is €37,311 and rises incrementally. The Garda recruitment drive was launched on February 6 and runs until February 27 with applications made on the publicjobs.ie website.
