Gardaí have issued a warning to motorists not to leave their vehicles unattended while defrosting during the current cold snap.
Gardaí have urged motorists to ensure their vehicle is never left unattended when it is defrosting during the cold weather. A plunge in temperatures is expected to bring flurries of snow around Ireland over the weekend, with motorists being urged to take care on the icy roads as the mercury drops below freezing.
Met Éireann have issued a spate of weather warnings in anticipation of the sub-zero temperatures, placing six counties under a Status Orange Snow and Ice warning, while the rest of Ireland, bar Fermanagh and Armagh, are under either a Status Yellow Snow and Ice warning, or a UK Met Office Yellow Ice warning. Ahead of the big freeze, Gardaí have warned motorists to ensure their vehicles are never left unattended while they defrost them in the morning, but also to make sure you have frost free windows. A Garda spokesperson wrote: 'With the frosty weather upon us now, we would like to advise motorists never to leave your vehicles unattended when it is unlocked and the engine is running whilst it is defrosting in the morning during cold weather. 'When defrosting your vehicle, defrost externally by using de-icer or if you turn on your car please remain inside your car and take the time to defrost windscreens thoroughly. 'Make sure to have full frost free 180 degree vision with a clear windscreen and front and side windows. 'If you need to use your car for essential travel during the current cold spell ensure your car has been fully de-iced and warmed before driving, and ensure tyres and wipers are adequate for cold driving conditions. 'Make sure to give yourselves a few extra minutes in the morning to get your car defrosted and ready for your journey.
