Gardai also discovered that vehicle wasn't insured or taxed, and had no NCT
A disqualified motorist who was caught using a cardboard cut-out as an insurance disc has had their vehicle seized by gardai.
After putting the vehicle's details through the garda's Automatic Number Plate Recognition system, which uses optical character recognition technology to automatically read vehicle registration plates, it was discovered that the car wasn't insured or taxed, and had no NCT.
"We were alarmed that the driver was also disqualified from driving. But a cardboard cut-out as a fake insurance disc was certainly one we don't see too often. This car was seized and proceedings will now follow."Last month gardai in Cork were alerted to an uninsured Mercedes B-class car thanks to the Mobility app, which quickly scans a vehicle's reg and provides information about tax, insurance, and NCT status.
