Gardai catch driver at 2am checkpoint ahead of weekend of speed and alcohol checks
Officers hiding in the dark spotted the motorist on the N22 doing 160km/h in a 100km/h zone before chasing them down to issue a fine.
A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Cork as part of the 24-hr Operation Slow Down conducted a speed checkpoint on N22 between 1am and 2am. A driver was detected driving at 160kmph in a 100kmph zone. FCPN issued." Speaking after the initiative, Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman said: "In excess of 1000 drivers were prosecuted for speeding. These drivers will now receive 3 penalty points on their licence, but their driving yesterday put themselves and all other road users at risk.
"Yesterday one more person died on our roads, 71 people have now died on our roads to date. I continue to appeal to all road users to Slow Down and stay safe this Bank Holiday Weekend." Officers will be out in force across the weekend with speed and Mandatory Intoxication testing checks expected countrywide.
