The annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors last night heard the uniform’s T-shirt leaves officers chilly at crime scenes in the middle of winter – while the soft shell jacket is too warm when gardaí wear it inside.
Gardai want changes to the force’s new multi-million euro uniform – because it leaves them too hot and too cold.
The uniform, only the third in the 100 year history of the force, was introduced in 2022 – to much acclaim from officers. It was seen as more modern and functional – and included items like cargo pants with extra pockets, a T-shirt, new boots and a high visibility jacket. She added: “We are not giving out about the appearance of it – when we get to a scene it is really important that the uniform is visible, that we can command attention, that we can command respect.
“The T-shirt doesn’t have the thermal value outside and the soft shell jacket that is warm is much too hot when we wear it inside.
