It will be the first time An Garda Siochana owns its own water cannon – previously the force borrowed two from the PSNI. The cannon will be capable of each carrying some 5,200 litres of water but are smaller than the two cannon borrowed from the PSNI.

Gardai are set to splash out up to €1.5 million on two new water cannons to take on rioters, it has emerged. Commissioner Drew Harris yesterday confirmed a Mirror story that the force was buying the brand new vehicles from a European manufacturer – and they would be on the streets here in around four months.

“At the same time, neither do we want to be dependent on having to loan a vehicles when we should be self sufficient ourselves.” Commissioner Harris said the vast majority had been peaceful, however. He said: “The great majority of protests pass off peacefully and what I'd like to say is that we've had situations which could have been volatile and which could have proven to be very difficult and they were successfully policed through.
