Gardeners are being told to hang CDs or DVDs in the garden to protect fruit and veg from birds in July and August - and it really works, according to one garden centre.
Garden enthusiasts are being encouraged to repurpose their old CDs this July by repurposing them as useful decoration.
The reason behind this unusual gardening tip is to safeguard plants from pesky birds. Despite their reputation, birds are actually terrified of CDs and won't dare to snatch your strawberries or nibble at your raspberries if you've lined CDs along your raised beds. A gentle breeze causes the CDs to spin and reflect light randomly, effectively scaring away the birds. It doesn't necessarily have to be a CD - an old DVD will do the trick too.
They suggest hanging the discs loosely so that even the slightest breeze makes them spin and catch the sun's rays. To keep the birds on their toes, change the location of the CDs around your beds every now and then.
