It can be difficult to know how best to care for your garden when a heatwave hits - but we have rounded up some simple tips on how you can adjust your routine to help your plants thriveand expert Jack Stooks knows a thing or two about tending outdoor spaces, having worked as King Charles' senior gardener at Highgrove for over two decades.
He has pinpointed some simple heatwave-friendly changes that people can make in their gardening routine, saying, "I always encourage people to water late at night or early in the morning before the sun comes up. Another change is feeding plants when it's raining. Don’t feed them when it's too hot because you're just going to burn them off. When it’s raining, go to town and feed everything.
"I used to try and feed the potwork every second week, but if you knew rain was coming, it would be a great time to feed. We're always forewarned with weather apps, and we know when heatwaves are coming.
"With fears that heatwaves might become even more common during our summers, Jack says he has noticed some changes in stock at garden centres. "I think that people are selling different plants in garden centres. My roses that I've had in, I never water them. So pots I will water, obviously, because they will just die as they get baked in their pots, but I will try not to water if I can help it.
But plants do tend to do quite well because they get used to that way of life," he said on behalf of"Whereas if you're watering a plant from day one and it gets used to that, then it's not going to put its roots down, it's not going to try and look for moisture in the ground. When it comes to grass, if it's starting to get dry, you don't really want to be mowing and taking all the growth off the top. "
