England boss Gareth Southgate elected to start Luke Shaw in the Euro 2024 Final against Spain on Sunday night, rolling the dice on his fitness rather than sticking with Kieran Trippier
Gareth Southgate insisted he wants to give England fans “the night of their lives” - after rolling the dice on Luke Shaw's fitness.
Shaw, who featured as a half-time substitute in the semi-final win over Netherlands, replaced Kieran Trippier down England’s left side. The Newcastle man has deputised at left back or left wing-back throughout the tournament. But the England boss believes that Shaw brings better balance to his side and will give England better shape - particularly offensively - against Spain in in Berlin.
“He’s ready to play. Obviously he gives us balance. Kieran’s done a brilliant job for the team and the way he’s handled everything in the last few weeks has been top class.” In contrast, England have stuttered for the most part, but Southgate and his side were full of belief that they had what it takes to defeat Luis de la Fuente’s men in the Olympiastadion.
