Sherin Alsabbagh, an Irish-Palestinian citizen, has been separated from her 74-year-old mother, Najwa, in Gaza for over a year due to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Although her mother was granted entry to Ireland, the closure of the Rafah border crossing and the volatile security situation have prevented her from leaving Gaza. Sherin has prepared a room in her home for her mother and awaits the day they can be reunited.

She has family there, including her mother Najwa . The Department of Foreign Affairs informed Sherin in February that her mother had been approved for entry to Ireland, subject to Israel agreeing to let her leave Gaza. Sherin’s brother, his wife, and their four children, who live with Najwa, were refused visas. Sherin has signed an undertaking to accommodate Najwa at her Ballaghaderreen home. However, with Gaza border crossings closed and Israeli attacks ongoing, her mother cannot get out.
