Almost a quarter of students missed more than 10% of school this year, sparking fears that high absence levels may have hampered pupils' GCSE performance
Ben Davis, headteacher at St Ambrose Barlow RC high school in Swinton, said: “With pupils we’ve seen absence rates climb. We’ve seen greater persistence absenteeism [attendance levels below 90 per cent], greater severe absenteeism [below 50 per cent].”
Amanda Spielman, Ofsted chief inspector, warned in December that the “clear social contract” between parents and schools appeared to have broken down during the pandemic, with many pupils no longer attending classes as normal. But most students who sat their GCSEs this year will have had little choice about much of their absence from secondary education. Schools were closed for long periods of time in many parts of the country during the pandemic, when this year’s cohort were in Years 8 and 9, leaving them reliant onMost pupils lost over a third of their expected days in the classroom due to the pandemic, according to a 2021 study by the London School of Economics.
Dr Jo Saxton, Ofqual’s chief regulator, acknowledged the problem and said the exams watchdog would be “putting in place some protection for this cohort” when GCSE results are published on Thursday.
