Former Premier League defender George Baldock has tragically passed away at the age of 31 in Greece, just months after moving abroad to join Panathinaikos in the summer
George Baldock was found dead in a swimming pool by the owner of his Greek villa after his wife was unable to contact him, according to local reports.
Baldock's heartbroken family expressed their "shock" at the devastating news of his sudden passing on Wednesday night. A statement read: "We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss. We ask please that the media respect our privacy at this time."
Baldock won 12 caps for Greece after qualifying to represent them through his grandmother. He played in all five of England's top divisions for the likes of the Blades, Oxford United and MK Dons. He featured for Panathinaikos on Sunday in their match with Olympiacos. "There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family."
A statement from the Greek Super League read: "The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."
