George Jones is, of course, known for his resonant, stirring vocals on such country hits as “She Thinks I Still Care,” “The Grand Tour” and “Tender Years.”
Nancy Jones personally called up each artist to ask if they’d perform at a concert celebrating her late husband George Jones, one of the greatest country singers to ever live. “And they were just like, ‘Oh, yes ma’am, we will be there. We love George,’” Nancy says. “They were all excited.”
The concert is being filmed for a TV special to be broadcast at a later date. Tickets go on sale 10 a.m. Dec. 22 viaand the VBC Box Office and start at $25. A $200 VIP upgrade includes dinner the night before the concert with Nancy Jones and friends. Nancy’s personal favorite George Jones tracks include “Walk Through This World With Me” and “Someday My Day With Come.” In addition to Jones’ massive influence on country singers, he’s also a favorite of rockers like Elvis Costello and The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
“But when I heard this man sing,” Nancy recalls, “and the way he phrased things I was blown away. I just thought, man, this is great. I mean, I loved it. And so when it was time for me to leave, I said, ‘You know, I gotta go. Do you want to ride to the airport with us?’ And he’s like, ‘Nope, you’re not going. You’re going to stay with me.’ And I’m like, ‘No, I can’t. I’ve got a job and two girls at home.’ I flew commercial and when I got home, George was at my house.
Away from music, George’s interests included watching and betting on NFL pro football. Nancy fondly recalls his sense of humor. “He was a funny man and didn’t even know he was funny,” she says. Nancy’s currently working on a book about her life with George, tentatively titled “Jesus and Jones.”
