George Miller's visually spectacular fantasy drama follows a British narratologist who unwittingly releases a Djinn in Istanbul, leading to a sweeping, philosophical journey through three thousand years of history, love, and the nature of storytelling itself.
George Miller, the legendary filmmaker celebrated for his Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, returned to cinema with Three Thousand Years of Longing, an ambitious and visually stunning fantasy drama starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.
The story centres on Alithea, a British narratologist who studies stories and the way they shape human experience, who is visiting Istanbul for a work conference. While exploring a bustling market, she purchases an antique bottle, unknowingly unleashing a Djinn, a powerful and ancient supernatural being. Rather than immediately offering three wishes, the Djinn is surprised to encounter a modern woman who is content with her life and refuses to desire anything.
Alithea is also deeply wary of him, aware that most traditional stories about genies serve as cautionary tales about temptation, power, and unintended consequences. To put her at ease and to explain how he came to be imprisoned in the bottle, the Djinn begins recounting the extraordinary story of his life. The narrative gracefully shifts between the intimate present-day conversations in Alithea's hotel room and breathtaking flashbacks that span roughly three thousand years of human history.
Audiences are taken on a sweeping journey through ancient kingdoms, lost empires, romances, wars, and moments of profound joy and heartbreak, all experienced through the eyes of the Djinn. These sequences allow the film to explore deeply philosophical questions about the nature of storytelling itself, the evolving meaning of love across different eras, and the ways in which human life has transformed over millennia.
The chemistry between Elba and Swinton anchors the story beautifully, with both performers bringing warmth, wit, and emotional depth to their roles, making the characters instantly likeable and their interactions deeply engaging. Essentially functioning as Miller's creative blank cheque following the runaway commercial success of Mad Max: Fury Road, the film was produced with a budget of approximately sixty million dollars, and that investment is clearly visible on screen.
The production design, costumes, and visual effects combine to create a feast for the eyes, with the colourful and vibrant flashback sequences standing out as particularly inventive and emotionally resonant. Despite these considerable strengths, the film underperformed at the global box office, grossing only around twenty million dollars, making it a notable financial disappointment. Critics, however, generally responded favourably, praising its ambition, originality, and emotional intelligence.
The film's genre-bending nature, blending romance, fantasy, philosophy, and historical epic, may have made it difficult to market to a broad audience, yet it remains a fascinating and deeply personal project from one of cinema's most visionary directors
