George Santos reflects the worst of modern politics | Opinion
Rep.-elect George Santos, R-N.Y. sits in the chamber during opening day of the 118th Congress at the U.S. Capitol, Tuesday, Jan 3, 2023, in Washington. Eventually, House Republicans will decide on a House speaker and George Santos will be sworn in as a freshman Republican congressman from New York.
Grossly unethical politicians are hardly new, nor do all elected officials live up to our expectations. But most resumes aren’t an advanced course in creative fiction and chock full of grandiose misrepresentations as is Santos’ biography. Santos lied his way into office, and some GOP officials who backed him knew of the lies. And a majority of voters either disregarded Santos’ problems or voted for the candidate’s party identification when they went to the polls.
