A German super trawler, the 'Helen Mary', was detained off the Cork coast on suspicion of violating European fisheries legislation. The vessel was intercepted by the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) and escorted to Cork Harbour for inspection by EU inspectors, with support from the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) and Gardai.

A German super trawler, the 'Helen Mary', was detained off the Cork coast on Sunday on suspicion of fisheries offences. The ship was intercepted by a patrol vessel from the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) and escorted to Cork Harbour on Monday. The alleged violations occurred in waters approximately 185 kilometers off the coast of Cork, within Ireland's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) but outside its territorial waters.

The massive 117-meter vessel, with its home port in Rostock, Germany, was detected by the EFCA's Ocean Protector patrol vessel on Sunday. Following a brief exchange with the trawler's crew, EFCA staff directed the 'Helen Mary' to proceed to Cork Harbour, where it arrived on Monday morning. European Union inspectors, leading the investigation, are currently conducting an inspection of the ship with the assistance of the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) and Gardai. The 'Helen Mary' is expected to remain in Cork for the duration of the inspection. The SFPA confirmed the incident, stating that EFCA officers detected suspected infringements of European fisheries legislation involving the trawler within Ireland's EEZ. They emphasized that Joint Deployment Plans (JDP) provide the legal framework for joint inspection deployments involving assets and inspectors from member states and EFCA. When operating in EU waters, EFCA inspectors always have Union inspectors from member states onboard, leading the inspection process. The SFPA added that the vessel in question was directed to Cork port for further investigation
