Twenty-five members of a far-right group are in custody for plotting to overthrow the German government after sweeping nationwide raids this morning.
Justice Minister Marco Buschmann tweeted that a major anti-terror operation was taking place and a suspected "armed attack on constitutional bodies was planned".Former members of the military were also a significant part of the coup plot, reports said. They included ex-elite soldiers from special units.
Police have been waiting to strike the group, which has been linked to a number of violent attacks and the spreading of racist conspiracy theories. Deutsche Welle previously reported that the majority of them are over 50 years old and come from disadvantaged communities.
