Get rid of your possessions before you die. You’re only leaving a huge family rift behind
My grandmother, Sylvia, died recently. She lived a full life, it was a peaceful passing. One of the many remarkable things about her is that by the time she died she had divested herself of almost all her possessions. And I mean all of them. Property, books, pictures, trinkets – the lot. The suitcase was passed from Frieda Andersson, who died in 1993, to her three children. The sibling most recently in possession of the suitcase, Tim, died in 2020 and his widow and his sister have been squabbling over it ever since, eventually landing the case in the Central London County Court this week. The weary-sounding Judge Nigel Gerald labelled the fight over the items that have no monetary value as “completely mad” at a previous hearing.
No, no, I get it. Family photographs and memorabilia might have no monetary value but their sentimental value is unquantifiable. But I do wonder what the ultimate end for this suitcase was supposed to be.
