Let’s make this fun. We’ll each draft three players we think are likeliest to earn this “face of the league” label five years from now in 2028. We randomized the draft order. I’ll start, with Jared and Mike going next. No snake draft; this isn’t an exercise to be “won,” but rather to invoke discussion.
So it comes down to Dončić and Jayson Tatum for players who will be in their prime by 2028. Tatum has the advantage of his team’s market and being the new face of Gatorade and Jordan brand, plus he likes holding court with his interviews and giving memorable quotes that help drive that star narrative. But Dončić is such a brilliant creator that I trust he will win multiple titles if he can get a better cast around him, whether it’s in Dallas or elsewhere.
Still, it’s clear Jokić has no desire to take James’ mantle. He’ll be prominent, but I’m not sure the league’s face can be conjured from rings and flashy passes alone.Great, now I have to do another Tatum debate. This time, it’s with Victor Wenbanyama, a created player who somehow escaped the 2K servers and can shoot 35-footers like layups. The hype around Wemby is bigger than his wingspan and you can see him leaping into the MVP conversation by the end of his rookie deal just like Dončić.
