The New York Giants need wide receiver help, but the 30-year-old Odell Beckham's injury history is not worth the gamble on a multi-year contract.
has to bring Beckham in for a visit. Even after the loss to the Lions, the Giants are 7-3 with a real chance to make the playoffs. Beyond that, these next seven games could impact the future of Daniel Jones as the team continues to evaluate if he’s the long-term answer at quarterback. They need to give him a fighting chance.
Still: it’s hard to see how this is a good fit between a team and a player. The Giants need wide-receiver help immediately, and Beckham is “said to be in great shape,” they need only ask running back Saquon Barkley how difficult it is to perform at a high level in the first season back after an ACL tear.
Beckham, who suffered his injury in Super Bowl LVI, hasn’t even had a full year to recover. The Giants wouldn’t be getting the Beckham who set records in his brilliant first three years wearing No. 13 in East Rutherford. They wouldn’t even be getting the Beckham who became a reliable No. 2 receiver for the Rams as they won it all.
They have no idea what they would be getting in the short term. The bigger concern, though, is that Beckham wants a multiyear deal. Schoen has shown an impressive level of discipline as he has tried to dig out from the salary-cap hell he inherited. How does adding a big contract for a player with a long history of injuries make sense for a Giants team trying to rebuild its roster?
It doesn’t, especially given the competition. The Cowboys have been lobbying relentlessly to bring Beckham to Dallas, where he’d give quarterback Dak Prescott another weapon. This is a win-now team with an owner in Jerry Jones who won’t get outbid. Beckham would get everything he wants in Jerry World, a huge spotlight and a championship caliber team.
