An inquest heard that Sean Heraghty's death was a tragic accident.

Sean Heraghty was just 26 years old when walked into the path of an oncoming motor while visiting family in Donegal for Christmas.

His family and friend attended the hearing at Letterkenny courthouse on Friday, where a statement from the young driver, Keelan McFadden, was read out, the Irish Mirror reports. It explained that he had dipped the headlights on his silver Volkswagen Passat as he entered a straight part of the road leading to Dunfanaghy around 4.15am on December 27, 2017 when he heard a bang and noticed his wing mirror had broken off.

After he jumped from the car, Ms Sharkey ran after him into the darkness and saw a person lying on the road. Local taxi-driver Eamon Harkin then arrived on the scene and asked what had happened and questioned Mr McFadden as to why he had not tried to avoid the person. All three said they had noticed a man "staggering" along the side of the road and Mr Harkin said he had even flashed his lights at oncoming drivers warning them to be careful of the pedestrian.
