Ever wondered why you used to get such a horrific whiff of rotten eggs heading in and out of Queen Street station on the train? We recall the 'Stinky Ocean' that punished our olfactory senses back in the day.
Back in the day Glasgow's Sighthill was once infamous for being home to a vast chemical dump - nicknamed 'Stinky Ocean' by locals - that caused undue suffering to the senses for those who lived near it.
In operation from 1797 until 1964, the chemical works produced bleaching powder for the textile industry, with Stinky Ocean the pool where the chemical effluent was dumped. Yet for over 150 years, the pollution of this area to the north of Glasgow city centre continued, even after the site of the works were levelled and built over in the 60's.
