We spoke to Dom Nisbet, the man behind the bar on Pollokshaws Road, about being one of the first cashless venues in the UK and creating a niche pub where everyone can feel welcome.
When Koelschip Yard originally took over the former Kelly's Pub site on Pollokshaws Road, there were some doubts that a craft beer bar that not only didn't serve pints, but didn't take cash, would last long.
"Those early days, it was wild because everyone just assumed Kelly's had reopened. We tried as hard as possible to look from the outset like a completely different venue. We even painted it 'Finnieston Grey', as the joke went. "We want to make sure anyone stepping through our doors, feels welcomed and has an experience that left them feeling at home and wanting to come back.
Having just gone back to their old extended opening hours, they are still open seven days a week but will now open from 12 noon until midnight at the weekend. They've also give the place a spruce up, with a new sign from Bungo Sign Co. and a restoration of the famous green tiles outside. This is helpful when you consider that they not only have 14 different draught beers on at any given time, as well as two cask lines and around 120 to 130 in their fridges, with beers from around Scotland and the UK to further afield like Belgium , the US, Australia and New Zealand.
"Yeah we are a beer bar first and foremost but we still want people to come here and enjoy the bar, even if they don't drink craft beer. That's really important, we want everyone to choose us.
