Glee creator Ryan Murphy addresses the possibility of rebooting the popular musical dramedy, revealing that he’s considered it.
Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy reveals his recent thoughts on a reboot. Murphy has become one of the biggest names in Hollywood, mainly known for the American Horror Story franchise and its various offshoots. He's also recognized for his divisive takes on true-crime stories for Netflix with his recent work on Dahmer and The Watcher.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Even though the series wrapped its run in 2015, questions have continued to pop up about a potential Glee reboot. Fox Entertainment President Michael Thron mentioned Glee among the titles he would love to revive when asked in 2021. The cast has weighed in as well, with star Jane Lynch sharing his view that the story couldn't be remade today as it was back then.
I’m at the phase now with that show, you know, where it’s like, well, there’s been enough time. Like, maybe we should really re-examine it as a brand. You know, should we do a reboot of it in some way? Should we do a Broadway musical of it in some way? Like, it’s sort of like an interesting legacy that I’m interested in doing in a positive way after sort of pausing for a while. But I don’t know. I just love what it says and what it did.
What A Glee Reboot Could Look Like Throughout the podcast, Murphy demonstrates that he's very aware of the way that Glee has aged poorly in some ways. He even suggests to McHale and Ushkowitz that the next time he's on as a guest, they should do a segment where they openly call out and discuss the show's flaws. A series reboot would likely need to expand beyond the trio of co-creators to bring in other voices and be more inclusive and representative of different perspectives.
But as fans of Glee will attest, there was already an attempt to effectively reboot the premise while the show was still airing by bringing in new characters and splitting up the cast. That proved divisive, with Murphy confessing that he doesn't look back fondly on that particular direction. Maybe the lesson is not to bring the dramedy back, at least not as an ongoing show, but instead try to do something innovative with its brand. A run on Broadway could be just the thing.
