Paul Bird - the owner and founder of the hugely successful Paul Bird Motorsport team - has died at the age of 56

Glenn Irwin has paid an emotional tribute to "bossman" Paul Bird following the BeerMonster Ducati team owner's death.

Mr Bird, owner and founder of the hugely successful Paul Bird Motorsport team, died following a short illness on Friday at the age of 56. During his time at the helm his team has claimed a record eight British Superbike titles, and also enjoyed victories in World Superbikes and the Isle of Man TT.Carrick rider Irwin is in his second spell with the team, having initially joined back in 2016 before returning this season. He currently sits second in the BSB championship behind teammate Tommy Bridewell.

The multiple North West 200 winner said on social media: "Paul Bird 'Bossman'. I can’t believe you're gone, boss. Only late on Monday night after Cadwell we were texting, how happy you were with the weekend, how Mr Ciabatti [Ducati Sporting Director] had contacted you and you wanted to get 2024 boxed off.

“I told you no stress but you were being the typical Bird man, offering WorldSBK wild-cards, Daytona 200, stuff that other teams simply just would not do. That’s what set you aside to the general public but to us who knew you on the inside there was so much more.
