Greater Manchester Police accused of unjustified strip searches of women in custody as top barrister to be appointed
A leading barrister is set to be appointed to assess the cases of three women who have accused Greater Manchester Police of unjustified strip searches while in custody.
The other two cases, he added, were only brought to his attention recently. He said he has spoken to the leadership team at Greater Manchester Police and 'had an assurance that there will be an investigation'.He told Sky News: "There's a broader issue isn't there here, about women's safety. Are women safe in custody? And that question needs an answer with regards to Greater Manchester Police.
In a statement, Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods said the force 'understands and shares the concerns of the public' regarding the allegations made. He said allegations made by one woman were the subject of an ongoing investigation.
