Judges said Sarah De Meulemeester's sentence wasn't 'excessive'

A Greater Manchester Police officer who was jailed after her dangerous driving left a teenage boy seriously injured has lost an appeal against her sentence.

The court heard De Meulemeester, a police constable, faces an accelerated misconduct hearing at Greater Manchester Police next month, where 'there is a chance her career would be over'. Liverpool Crown Court heard how De Meulemeester, who was not authorised by Greater Manchester Police to travel at excess speeds because she was a 'basic police driver', drove at speeds of up to 61mph and also went the wrong way around a traffic island.

De Meulemeester, of Mill Court, Chinley, Derbyshire, was found guilty by a jury after trial of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She was jailed in May. The sentencing hearing heard Khia was left in a persistent vegetative state following the smash, having suffered severe head and brain injuries.

"You live and breathe being a police officer. All that effectively came to an end when on Boxing Day 2020 you did not stop, pause or think of the consequences of the manner in which you were driving." When information about the use of a knife came through on the radio, another officer who was trained and authorised to drive above the speed limit, overtook De Meulemeester’s vehicle and switched on emergency lights.
