Vikas Bhagat found guilty of murdering Danielle McLaughlin in 2017. Family expresses relief at the verdict, after years of legal proceedings and emotional turmoil.
Vikas Bhagat , a local man from Goa , was found guilty of murdering Irish backpacker Danielle McLaughlin at the District and Sessions Court in south Goa on Friday morning. Ms. McLaughlin, a 28-year-old native of Buncrana, Ireland , was tragically discovered deceased in a secluded area of Canacona, a popular tourist destination in Goa , in March 2017. She had traveled to Goa with a female Australian friend and they were residing in a beach hut.
Prior to her death, they had been celebrating Holi, a Hindu festival, in a nearby village.A postmortem examination revealed that cerebral damage and neck constriction were the cause of Ms. McLaughlin's death. In a statement released through their solicitor, Desmond Doherty, Ms. McLaughlin's mother Andrea Brannigan and sister Joleen McLaughlin Brannigan expressed their relief at the verdict, stating that justice had finally been achieved. They emphasized that Vikas Bhagat was solely responsible for the brutal end to Ms. McLaughlin's life and clarified that there were no other suspects or gangs involved. The family spoke of enduring an eight-year ordeal of delays and complications, with the trial taking place thousands of miles away from their home in Buncrana, Co Donegal. Despite the emotional and logistical challenges, they maintained patience and respect for the Indian legal system, with the assistance of the British and Irish consular staff. The family expressed gratitude to the court for allowing them legal representation throughout the trial and extended their thanks to Mr. Vikram Varma, their lawyer in Goa, for his dedicated efforts. They also acknowledged the invaluable support of Mr. Doherty, who worked closely with their legal representative in India to guide them through the complex legal process. The family remains hopeful that Ms. McLaughlin can now find peace, and that they, as a family, can start to heal and find some comfort knowing that the person responsible for her horrific murder has been convicted
