is a TV juggernaut and such a staple in the schedules that it is hard to believe it is finally coming to an end after 37 years tonight. But it was only by a few random twists of fate that we ended up watching it at all.
A less well-known but even more delightfully random aspect of the case is that the Beeb had only ever alighted uponformat from Australian producer Reg Grundy, and he had insisted they buy something else from the catalogue as well. An Australian soap was perfect for filling a lot of airtime in the BBC’s newly-launched daytime schedule and was also, importantly, cheap. Thus did one of British television’s greatest recent phenomena make its way into our hearts.
, the storylines were impactful, memorable and much-discussed in school corridors and offices across the land.as cheap, wobbling wallpaper rubbish, but Fleet Street couldn’t ignore its mass-market appeal, and I’m convinced it was no coincidence that Sky TV came along so soon after – launched by Rupert Murdoch, an Australian no less, the master of recognising what works.
