The Government ’s family referendum has been defeated by 67.69 per cent. Counting will now start in the care referendum with results expected in the next number of hours. The family amendment suggested expanding the definition of a family to include those in “ durable relationships ”. It was believed that the family referendum was more likely to pass than the care amendment. The family referendum was defeated by 1,021,546 votes to 487,564.
The Dun Laoghaire constituency in south Dublin was an outlier in passing the family referendum by the slimmest of margins where it passed by 50.3 per cent. Counting will now start in the care referendum, with results expected in the coming hours. However, the Government has already conceded that it has also lost this vote. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar earlier described it as “two wallops”. However, he said that he accepted responsibility for the votes failing.
