Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien is expected to bring three memos to Cabinet his morning that will see the State spend 'hundreds of millions of euro' on housing

The Government will make a major housing announcement following today’s Cabinet meeting in a bid to tackle vacancies, make building cheaper and accelerate the construction of affordable apartments.

The first proposal will amend the existing Croi Conaithe vacancy scheme, which offers grants of up to €30,000 for vacant homes and up to €50,000 for derelict homes. Cabinet will also be asked to approve proposals to scrap developer levies with immediate effect. Instead of a developer paying money to the local authorities for local infrastructure, the Department of Housing will pay the council for services such as footpaths, lights and water.

The final memo will see the Government providing subventions to developers to build cost rental apartments. This will see grants of €120,000 to €150,000 per unit.
