Taking similar action in Ms Smith’s case would be highly problematic – if not entirely impossible – for two reasons, sources said yesterday. As Ms Smith did not have to apply for citizenship or take an oath, there is no way to legally revoke it, officials said.Convention on Statelessness to which Ireland is a signatory. The convention states no person can be stripped of citizenship if it would leave them stateless.
Furthermore the marriage itself would likely be considered invalid, having taken place under Isis rule.
