Few TDs were in the chamber for Dáil debate on biodiversity loss recommendations for government

The Government has been urged to begin preparatory steps in the lifetime of this Dáil to consider a referendum on the rights of nature.

The Green Party TD thanked the 99 citizens, Assembly chair, Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin, and her advisors for the “thoughtful, thorough, well-researched report”, which contained 159 recommendations to prevent further biodiversity loss.He said: “The committee is particularly concerned with water quality.”

He also said the State should increase the land dedicated to national parks and that marine-protected area legislation be progressed with urgency. Nature Minister, Malcolm Noonan, said: “My officials have started exploring ways in which the rights of nature could be formally recognised, including the potential for constitutional change.
