Government urged to raise drinking age to 20 in Ireland

The Dublin senator said: “I am now calling for the adoption of the Icelandic model in tackling alcohol abuse among young people, which has proven highly effective to date.“They increased the legal drinking age to 20 years and put a ban on alcohol and tobacco advertisements. “In 1998, 42% of 15 - 16-year-old Icelanders were reported to have been drunk during the previous 30 days, whereas by 2014 only 6% of students report the same. Daily smoking and the use of cannabis has also decreased dramatically.”
